We don't know, at this time, what WNS will do to eastern caving but hope that any caving moratorium will be short.

I've just read the request for a caving moratorium put out by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.  Their request is just that - it is voluntary, not mandatory.  WVCC is on record though to acknowledge such a request by a government authority.  SO, as of Friday,March 27,2009:

ALL OF WVCC'S CAVES ARE CLOSED :  OWNED, LEASED, OR MANAGED.

You can call up U.S. F&W (http://www.fws.gov/northeast/white_nose.html) or for U.S. F&W updates (http://www.fws.gov/northeast/wnscaveadvisory.html) the Service WNS Web site.

Some welcome!  I'd hoped this would never happen.  First there's the Honey Bees demise, now some of the bats; hope we're not next!

Regardless, WVCC is still earnestly in the business of saving caves and karst features.  The WVCC MISSION is to "Preserve and maintain access to the cave and karst resources of West Virginia and Virginia for future generations".  If all goes well there will be bats left for us and for future generations.
