We stopped by the kiosk and noticed there were no flyers in the mailbox attached to the kiosk. I totally forgot to bring some.
The first item on the list was to see if the old barrel could be chopped up into small pieces and removed from the cave. The hammer and hatchet were no match for the barrel. Score now: barrel 2, Bob Hoke 0. We decided to declare the barrel historic and leave it in the cave.
We went in the cave after a few problems getting the lock undone. We found a few out arrows in the lower part of the cave. This was pretty surprising since it is such a small cave (750 feet). Louise noticed an old historical signature as you enter the back of the cave. The date was 1851. I've been back there at least 7 times and never noticed it.
We spent some time picking up glass shards and other trash in the front of the cave. We made a small dent in it and I'm sure there will be plenty there for our next clean-up trip in 2008.
On exiting the cave, it was discovered that it is difficult to lock the cave and to be sure the lock was securely shut. This may have been the problem with previous groups. We should discuss with the cave managers if it makes sense to get a lock with a larger shackle or not.
All in all, it was a successful clean-up tourist trip. Thanks to everyone who participated. |
